Year of Projects 2025-2026: Week 9

Having a very nice at-home long weekend this Labor Day. I had lunch out with a friend and we walked around the Santa Fe art market on Saturday but otherwise I’ve been home enjoying some crafting time.

I finished the collar on Dyad and the first sleeve on Asterie but since both of those look basically the same, I didn’t bother taking pictures this week.

I’ve stitched the house except for some random leaves and vines and added in the big maple tree in my Autumn Garden cross-stitch.

I have the third (of four) rows put together on my Birds and Bees quilt. My plan is to send this one out for long-arm quilting when it’s done. I haven’t done that before but I think this quilt with all the open space will lend itself to that.

I also stitched up another block on my snowman quilt.

And at the risk of this becoming a quilting blog, I’ve got a new quilt started. This is a Lori Holt pattern using Riley Blake fabrics licensed from Jane Austen’s Chawton Cottage. The pattern itself is free but I opted for a block of the month kit from Stitchin’ Heaven so I could use the called-for fabrics. You can see the entire design here.

It’s got a mix of pieces blocks and appliqué. I hadn’t used Lori Holt’s appliqué method before but I like it a lot! We’re starting in the center block which is all appliqué. I’ve gotten the pieces cut out and ready to be stitched down.

Another day off tomorrow will hopefully see a bit more progress on a few things for next week!

  1. Beautiful projects. What do you do with all the quilts? I’m starting to run into that with too many sweaters and tees.

    1. Some are just decor sized – like the snowmen. And I’ll have it out just for the holidays when it’s done. But I gift a lot of things. I often like making the thing just to make the thing without necessarily feeling like I have to keep it forever.

  2. I love how everything is turning out, but especially the cross stitch! I love working cross stitch pieces on fabrics other than standard white Aida. It gives them a totally different feel.

    1. Thank you! I’m excited to have this season in progress – I love the vintage-y feel that dyed linen gives the piece

  4. The cross stitch is so pretty and giving me autumn 🍂 decoration inspiration, time to dig out my decorations. I love looking at the quilts and projects on the go. It’s a hobby I can do vicariously because I must resist doing it myself 😂

    1. I am so ready for fall I’ve pulled out all the things already (it’s still quite warm here tho – definitely feels like late summer). I’ll do my best to keep your vicarious quilting busy. 😉

  6. Is the appliqué technique you’re using for the new quilt machine or hand appliqué?

    1. This particular technique uses the machine to sew a very lightweight stabilizer to the back of each motif. You then turn everything right side out and it means all the motif edges are lovely and clean. And then you hand appliqué them in place. I suppose you could machine appliqué them although I’m doing that part by hand.

      1. Interesting. Have never come across that technique before. I’ve dabbled in needle turn and there was another hand appliqué technique I was looking at a few years ago that I’ve forgotten the details of (I think it used freezer paper?), but this one is new.

      2. Definitely could have been freezer paper. I have done that too. 😊 This technique is one Lori Holt uses for her quilts – it was new to me too but I really like it!
