Year of Projects 2025-2026: Week 5

This week wasโ€ฆa challenge. Lots going on In Real Life so I was a little surprised at what I got done. Those little moments definitely add up!

I finished up the final braid of handspun for the Tour de Fleece with a light-DK 2-ply of blue-faced Leicester hand dyed by Funky Carolina. Iโ€™m going to try to get a summary post up about the Tour this week but in general I loved having the excuse to do so much spinning.

I have the sample Dyad sweater designed by Kate Oates to the point where the body and sleeve are separated and Iโ€™m working down the body of the jacket. Yarn is Magpie Fibers worsted weight superwash merino.

I also put in a few more body rounds on my Asterie sweater but it looks basically the same so no photo this week.

I picked up my repaired sewing machine this week and tested it out finishing this little cross-stitch piece from Blackbird Designs. I backed it with a neutral taupe velveteen and then hand-ruched some blue silk ribbon I had in stash to trim the edges. I have that out on the little narrow table by our back door so I can see it whenever Iโ€™m in or out of the house.

I then started The Autumn Garden by The Drawn Thread which is the 3rd in this seasonal series I have done (winter and summer are completed). Not much of a start but Iโ€™ve got the house started as the anchor point for everything else.

Finally Iโ€™ve got 2 tops I would like to sew to see me thru the end of summer and beginning of fall. The top floral print will be the short-sleeve/flutter-sleeve version of Aster and the other one shown will be the long-sleeved version. Iโ€™m excited about both of these and the muslin I made up only needed a few very minor tweaks for a good fit so Iโ€™m optimistic I will wear both of these a lot. Iโ€™ve been looking at other patterns Iโ€™d like to make and incorporate into my wardrobe to replace some fast fashion pieces I donโ€™t wear very often.

Thatโ€™s it for me this week!

  1. Nice that you could get your sewing machine repaired. Years ago I gave my sister my quilting machine that has a gazillion stitches and it’s recently stopped working. I was sure she could find someone to do a repair, but she hasn’t had any luck finding anyone. It makes me sad to see these skills are being lost. I know I would be hard pressed to find a repair shop locally, too.

    1. To be honest, I struggled as well. The one place is an hour’s drive from me, and I had to make an appt to drop off (which was a 3-month wait) and then they kept it for an entire month for what wound up basically being just a maintenance appointment. I really didn’t want to have to replace it but I guess everything is becoming throw-away these days. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  2. What a sweet xs to see when coming and going. The blue lace makes it pop. Congrats on your spinning completion. Now that your seeing machine is back you will be super creative in making your new tops.

    1. Thank you! I’m looking forward to adding a few new pieces to my wardrobe. I hate shopping so I tend to wear the same pieces until they are really worn out, so it will be nice to have a few new things.

    1. I will do my best! I’m really rubbish at getting modeled shots of anything but I am willing to try!

  6. You really did get a lot done on your Dyad. I think I said before, the color is just beautiful. And what a pretty cross stitch. I love the ruffled ribbon. That finished the pillow off perfectly.

  7. Your handspun looks so pretty! Do you have any plans in mind for it yet?

How nice to have gotten your sewing machine back and I can’t wait to see both your tops made up. The XS finished piece is so pretty and must be a delight to see as you walk past it daily.

    1. Thank you! No plans for this particular yarn although it would probably work up nicely in a pair of mittens with the BFL. And yes! I am thrilled I got my machine back. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Oh, thanks for the shot of Dyad on the form! That makes a lot more sense now how the front will look. I love both cross stitch pieces too, the finished one and the new one both have a great design! And you did a lovely job with the finishing on the bird one.

I’m really hoping that I don’t need to get any repairs done on my sewing machine anytime soon. So many of the parts are plastic that I’ve been careful when using it, but I also fear that it means replacing broken parts won’t be as easy as when everything was metal. Alas.

    1. Thank you on all accounts! I am excited to have the autumn one done. I also have a non-seasonal (although sort of summer) butterfly one I might do as well.

IKR? It’s already hard to find repair options but then, especially with tariffs and such, the parts themselves might not be the easiest to find. I hate the thought of having to replace an entire machine for one cranky bobbin piece.

      1. My sister’s reverse toggle broke on her machine. (Dumb plastic piece.) And the shop she took it to said they couldn’t get a replacement part. At least for that there’s a workaround, but I imagine having to constantly turn the fabric instead of just being able to back up gets really annoying.

      2. Ugh! Yeah! That would drive me crazy after the first few times!

      3. Me too! But replacing the whole machine for one dumb part would be expensive.

  9. Such pretty handspun. You’ve reminded me I must have a go at oiling my sewing machine to see if it needs repairing or servicing. I love how you are framing a labelling your pieces you share with us, makes them look like little works of art, which of course they are.

    1. Thanks! I find it is easier for me to get stuff posted if I have it available online with those little frames to work off any device. (First world problem, I know.)

I’m so glad you were able to get your machine serviced as it looks as though it has done a great job on the cross-stitch – a lovely piece to see daily. I love the handspun and the Cardigan ๐Ÿ˜Š
