Year of Projects 2025-2026: Mid-year check-in

Since we’re at the midpoint of the YOP cycle, I thought I would check in around my progress and what I have planned for the next 6 months. The progress info is at the top; plans are towards the bottom of the post.

Knitting/Crocheting: These are the WIPs I had at the start of the YOP year in July:
1. Asterie Sweater – DONE
2. Painted Plains Wrap – still in progress
3. Sailing School Socks – DONE
4. Bloom Your Heart Out Shawl – DONE
5. Earth, Wind & Fire Shawl – frogged and I will reuse the yarn
6. Geode Blanket – I decided not to continue with this pattern but I have restarted the blanket using the yarn and that’s in progress
7. Birlinn Blanket (in sockweight yarn) – still in progress. To be honest, I think this will be an in-progress project forever. It’s a great way to use up 10-11 g of sock yarn for each square so I’m torn about whether to leave this as an “active” WIP or not but it is indeed still active, just not worked on very much.
8. Mini Bean Stitch Blanket – Abandoned/frogged. I will reuse the yarn for something else.

Spinning: My goal was 48 ounces for the year. So far I’ve spun up 16 ounces, so I want to focus on spinning a bit more in the second half of the YOP year. (See Plans, below).

Sewing/Cross-Stitch:
1. Aviary Quilt (started and about 35% finished) – no progress so far
2. Winter Quilt (not started but I have supplies) – DONE and I will have an FO post on that shortly.
3. Autumn Garden Cross-Stitch – DONE.
4. Holiday full-coverage Cross-Stitch (this is a bigger project and probably not one I can finish this year but I’d like to get back to it and make some progress on it). In Progress.

I also have a couple of garments I’d like to get sewn this year, once I get my machine back and operational. – I have completed 2 garments so far, 1 blouse/top and everything but the buttons on a jumper which I plan to finish this week so I can wear it for an in-person day at work.

PLANS:

Knitting/Crocheting/Sewing: I’m lumping these all together as I would like to focus on a Make 9 combination of sewn garments and knit pieces that will work together for work wear. (More to come on that, but I have a cardigan and a vest I want to knit and a few sewn projects I’m deciding on.)

Otherwise, for knitting/crocheting:

  1. Finish Painted Plains
  2. Finish second Tea Leaves sock of the pair
  3. Finish Book Club Cardigan
  4. Work on Bin 10 projects to get thru some stash

Spinning/Cross-Stitch: I’m going to try to get a skein spun up every other month, and then alternate months with the full-coverage Santa cross-stitch. As much as I would like to start another of the seasonal Garden designs, I think I want to get this big project finished more and that’ll take some focused stitching.

Quilting:

I currently have the following things in progress:

  1. Jane Austen Block of the Month Anniversary quilt: This one will have supplies shipping monthly until I think October of 2026 (or at least late summer). I’ve been mostly keeping up with it – currently a month behind but I hope to catch up with it and stay caught up in 2026.
  2. Alice’s Wonderland Quilt: This is a Liberty fabrics sampler and I’m slowly working my way through the book. With 100 squares, it takes a while but I’m enjoying the process. No real timeline on it, but I plan to work on it in between other things.
  3. Aviary: I really got derailed on this one when I had to have my machine in the shop for a month, but I have all of the supplies now to finish it so will see if I can get 1 block a month done and have this one finished before the end of the YOP year.
  4. Leaf Pile Runner: Despite this taking forEVER for me to big-stitch hand-quilt, I am making progress on it and should have it done by the end of the YOP year.

Plenty to keep me busy, eh? As a friend and I were laughing about this weekend, we both have a tendency to overcommit to what is realistic for our time in terms of grand plans, so I am trying NOT to be that way and hopefully what I have mapped out for the next 6 months is reasonable!

  1. A few years ago I changed the way I planned my year’s knitting projects as I found I was getting disappointed in myself for not accomplishing what I had planned. I realized that I simply could not knit all the items I had planned. Fingering weight garments take 2-3 times as long to knit as a worsted weight garment so I try to stop comparing myself to others. Plus if projects required following charts, that would slow me down too. So I got off the bandwagon of “knit more this year than last year”. I’ve been happier as I focused on did I enjoy the knitting and the final item. If so, success!

    1. All good things to adjust your approach! If it makes it more enjoyable, you’ve done a great job figuring out the balance 🙂

  2. It can be a fine balance can’t it, having enough on your list to keep you motivated but not so much that you will feel a failure if you don’t do enough. I used to always lean towards a big challenge but as years go by I think I am moving to more realistic and relaxing targets. You have achieved a lot in the half year. Have a very happy 2026.

  3. It sounds to me like you’ve found a good balance of goals and leaving things loose for deciding later. I hope you have good luck with accomplishing the things you most want to do!
