Year of Projects 2025-2025: Weeks 22-23

Looking for Knit One, Spin Too? You’re in the right place! I took last week off from posting to do a little site update to rebrand and get ready to relaunch my podcast at the end of next week. I think I’ve got the old website URL with an auto redirect, but you may wish to update your readers with this link for the future.

Welcome to The Emporium of Forgotten Threads! More to come on the podcast later this week but let’s talk about what I’ve been working on in the meantime.

Kitty Cat Socks:
I finally finished up these fun striped/colorwork socks that I started in October. I used a sock set (Toil and Trouble) from Moonglow Yarn Company. As it turned out, I did have enough yarn to stripe the feet the entire way to the toes (but I decided I’d mix up the final stripe just for fun with different purples on each foot).

I used most of the minis, but have quite a bit of the main color left that I’ll probably hold double with another half-skein of sock yarn and make a charity hat at some point. These are great fun to knit and they have a built-in increase/decrease row on either side of the colorwork so you don’t have to worry about gauge being too tight in the cuff. The designer has several other similar designs and I’m considering making another (or two) in the future.

Postcard Cuties for Winter Quilt:

I also finished up my snowman quilt, designed by Bunny Hill. This was one of those projects that wound up being one thing after another, but I am super pleased with how it turned out. The quilt came as block of the month set from Shabby Fabrics with updated fabrics from the original. I really like the combination of the dark/light blues, tan and off-white prints. The quilt is a combination of pieced blocks, appliqué and embroidery. It also has a set of small buttons to be added after it’s quilted.

This one is off to the longarm quilter. It’s not a super big quilt and more decorative than a warm layer, so I’ve asked to have some kind of whimsical motifs done freestyle and gave the quilter free-rein to pick what she thought would work, so it’ll be fun to see how this comes back to me!

Bloom Your Heart Out Shawl:

This one has been languishing for just under 2 years and I have decided it is time to get it finished up. I am actually making pretty good steady progress on it (amazing how that happens when you work on something monogamously) and I have 52 rows left to finish.

The last section has 8 repeats of that wavy scalloped pattern and I have 5 of the 8 done. (Plus there are 6 rows of a border and the picot edge to knit.) I am going to try to keep focused on this and get it done in the next 2 weeks.

A Long Winter’s Nap:

Finally, another long languishing piece is this full coverage cross stitch. It’s a vignette of a larger artwork design by Dona Gelsinger. I have been trying to work on this during my lunch hour and depending on how far I get this month, I may opt to keep this out to work towards a finish in 2026.

This week I’ve been slowly working from right to left on the bottom, so Santa’s hand is starting to get filled in. (There’s a gray tabby cat asleep on his lap that his hand is resting on.) I’ve currently just hit the 45% finished mark of 70,603 stitches, so quite a bit of stitching left to go, but I will see what a month of work on it gets me.

That’s it for me this week YOP’ers. Hope you have a good one!

  1. Your Kitty Cat socks are gorgeous. I love the colors you’ve knit them in. And I think you’re really clever asking for freestyle whimsical motifs to be added to your quilt. That will be wonderful. And oh my goodness… Long Winter’s Nap already looks amazing. I’ve never tackled a full coverage cross stitch picture, and can’t imagine having the patience for that much detail. It will be stunning when finished.

    1. Thank you for all the kind comments! I really find this kind of xstitch meditative. It does take a while but it’s a lovely journey

  2. I just knitted some cats onto armwarmers. I love yours! Okay, mine started out as socks, but since the colorwork won’t go over my heel, armwarmers they are. Yours are really nice!

    1. This pattern ingeniously adds in stitches on either side of the colorwork section so it prevents that issue – but arm warmers are always good too!

      1. I think that the problem is the long floats that I put in when I knitted the eyes and nose on the cat. I’m pretty good with colorwork, but now I’m thinking that I will just go up a needle size and then embroider the nose and eyes later.

I am deciding to chart out the pattern on graph paper and then to decrease into the pattern along a central stitch. They are just armwarmers; it will work.

    1. Thank you! And me too! I love her style so I’m hopeful it will be in the same vein!

  6. I adore the socks! And your snowman quilt top looks so good. I can see where some buttons would make the perfect finishing touch, but I hadn’t even considered that they would need to be sewn on after the quilting part was completed.

The new site redesign looks good! (And thanks for the heads up on the new URL.)

    1. Thank you! I’m thrilled to have both of those finished (or at least mostly finished for the quilt).
