Year of Projects 2025-2026: Week 1

Here’s my weekly update for week one Year of Projects:

The Tour de Fleece kicked off yesterday and I had finished up the merino/bamboo singles I was working on for this a combo spin so I was able to start this bobbin of Polwarth wool from Three Waters Farm. I’ll be working on these singles this week.

Next, I’ve knit most of the leg on Helen Stewart’s Sailing School Socks for the second sock. I’d like to see if I can knit thru the heel flap and maybe start the gusset this week.

I’m ready to split the body and sleeves for Asterie. Hoping I can use this as my sort of mindless project now that it’s just garter stitch in the round and make some good progress. I’ve got yarn shipping this week for a couple of sample knit garments so I’d like to try to finish this in fairly short order.

And lastly, I pulled out the yarn for my Hygge Burst blanket which I’m making from the Geode colors from a collection HueLoco dyed last year. I have 2 more of the yellow to make (that color is Citrine) and I can start on the next color in the set.

    The colour of the Polwarth is gorgeous and the Asterie sweater is lovely. Both the colour and the yoke are great.

    Are sample knits different from test knits? Is this something you do for a LYS or a designer? I only did a few test knits. Until I don’t feel the need to make garments for myself or family, I’ll skip test knits as I did not enjoy the time pressure. But I could definitely see doing test knits if I get to the point of just needing to knit something that I’ll immediately donate to Goodwill/charity. I also need to do test knits that let me use yarn from my stash since I’m SABLE. I won’t buy yarn for a test knit.

      They usually are. Test knits assume that you’ll be checking the pattern for read-ability and any issues. Sample knits usually are just knit from an existing finished pattern for some specific reason – like to update the pattern with a new yarn, or to take to a show or a class. Usually for sample knits (although not always) there’s a specific yarn chosen for it, so I get sent the yarn and it doesn’t help at all for stashbusting! (Test knits you usually can use whatever yarn you want as long as you get gauge.)

    Such a pretty blue on your handspun singles. I’m sure that will look stunning when plied. I have not really got myself organised for TdF so was making rolags yesterday to spin but haven’t spun anything yet. The socks look good.

      Thank you! I am hoping I’ll have around 800 yards so I’d like to knit a colorwork yoke top and use that as the main color with a tonal – maybe dark blue? – for the color patterning.
