WIP Wednesday – July 2, 2025

I’ve got a handful of WIPs going right now, which will all be on the needles as my starting points for YOP – Year 15. These are essentially my focus projects for July, although I have a couple of sample knits that will probably also get started once the yarn arrives at my end.

Knitting:
Painted Plains wrap: I did some maths on this one to make it more like a very generous scarf and not really a wrap. I also omitted the zigzag cast-on edge (and will mirror that with plain garter stitch edging on the cast-off end too). I am using stash yarns – Six and Seven Fiber’s Alfalfa (MCN base) and Milo (merino/nylon base) mini for the light blue and the contrast colors, respectively, and Lambstrings Yarns Faun (MCN base) for the darker gray-blue. The contrast mini is the orange-y color and it’s an easy slip-stitch pattern but I really love how it breaks up the stockinette. This is my mindless piece to work on since it’s mostly stockinette. It’s earmarked for a holiday gift so I’ve got time to work on it.

Next up, I’ve just finished the patterned yoke on the Asterie sweater by Natasha Hornsby. I’m using Woolberry Fiber Co nonsuperwash wool Berry DK base in the colorway Burgundy. I’ve got a few rounds of garter stitch to work and then I can divide for the sleeves/body.

And finally, I’ve got Helen Stewart’s Sailing School Socks on the needles as well. I am using a skein of 757 Sock from Less Travelled Yarn (sadly no longer in business). I’ve finished sock one and have started the ribbing for sock two. This one takes a little bit more concentration for me; for whatever reason the repeat of this chart isn’t very intuitive for my brain.

Finally, the Tour de Fleece kicks off on July 5th. I had a quick sort through one of my fiber bins and I found a handful of combo-spins I could do with similar bases that will give me a little more yardage than spinning the 4 oz of each color separately. My plan for these 8 ounces (4 ounces of light blue Polwarth/silk from Three Waters Farm and 4 ounces of multicolored blues/grays on merino/bamboo from Oceanwind Knits) is to spin singles of each, then ply for a 2-ply sock weight, and then use that for a summer top, maybe adding in a skein of commercial sock yarn to do a colorwork yoke. I have started spinning the merino/bamboo singles and will probably have those done by the weekend, and then I’ll start the Polwarth/silk officially for the Tour.

That’s what I’m currently working on. As always, I like to have a handful of different things to work on, to switch up when I need a break or to keep things feeling engaging, and I’ll continue that this month as well.

Are you spinning for the Tour? I’d love to hear your plans if you are!

  1. I love your plans! The spinning looks lovely; those colors go so well together it looks like it was intentional. I’m planning on starting with some fiber I have that has matching dye lots prepared in different ways to spin up two sets of singles and then ply them together. After that… we’ll see! Not sure how long that will take, but I have a bunch of fiber in the stash that I can pull from once I’m done.

(Also, as a side note, I saw the HRCYED on your menu bar, and while it’s not a reading challenge I’ve done before, I’m sorely tempted to join in this year. I like both the “goal is not to complete the challenge but to broaden your reading” and some of the specific challenges.)

    1. Thank you! IKR? I guess the bonus of having a certain color palette means you can mix and match pretty easily.

If you decide to do HRCYED, let me know! There’s a lot of info and details to sort thru but I can already tell it’s going to expand my reading horizons a lot this year. There’s a really active Discord group too.

      1. I think I’m going to do HRCYED, since it is more of an “expand your reading” challenge than a “finish every prompt” challenge. I’ll check out the Discord later, too. That’s been a really helpful place for this kind of group.

  2. Really like that Asterie Sweater pattern. That is a pretty stitch on the scarf/shawl to add texture as well as the nice colors of the yarn

    1. I did too! It’s a nice yoke detail without being overly fussy I think.
Hoping I can continue to slog on with the scarf/shawl. I’m not great at getting scarves done but I’d like to gift my boss this for the holidays.

  3. Asterie looks very pretty, I love that yoke. It looks quite a small yoke in your picture but I clicked the link and see it does come down a bit. Quite tempted by that one so may add it to my favourites. I am trying to be good now and not purchase patterns unless I have the yarn first.

    1. It’s about average for the ones I’ve made – but it also has the opportunity to add rounds after the textured pattern so if you know the yoke depth you like, you can always add length there before splitting off for the sleeves/body.
